Recreational Craft-Directive 94/25/EC-Group of experts meeting

A meeting took place in Brussels on 24 November 2000. Issues related to the standardization programme but also the original text of the directive were debated. The question of compatilibity of some of the draft standards with the directive's essential safety requirements was raised and it was suggested that changes to the directive should be made to solve the few areas where problems currently exist, e.g. definitions of design categories, load information on the Builder's Plate, separation of petrol tank and engine compartments, and the requirement for powered multi-hulls to have a means of escape in the event of a turning over.The meeting supported the inclusion of personal watercraft (PWCs) into the scope of the directive for all aspects of construction and stability as well as for sound and exhaust emissions, i.e., PWCs would no longer be excluded from the current directive. If necessary new essential requirements could be added.
