Rio Tinto Expanding Yandi Iron Ore, Dampier Port

Rio Tinto plc, London and Melbourne, announced in mid-October it would spend 1.35 billion US dollars on further expansion of its wholly owned Hamersley Iron's Pilbara region Yandicoogina mine and Dampier port in Western Australia. Expansion of the Yandicoogina mine will increase annual capacity from 36 million metric tons to 52 million metric tons at an estimated cost of 530 million US dollars. The mine was commissioned in 1998 at an initial rated capacity of 15 million metric tons a year. Since 1999 Hamersley progressively has increased its capacity, with the most recent expansion, from 24 to 36 million metric tons a year, completed this August.
