North American Iron Ore Shipments Decline in June, But First Half 1995 Shipments Well Above 1994 at + 10 percent

In June North American iron ore shipments to US/Canadian destinations declined for the second consecutive month but continued well above the year-ago level in the first half of 1995, according to American Iron Ore Association figures. In June shipments of 7,732,000 gross tons were off by 363,000 tons or 4 percent from 8.095:000 tons in June 1994, but in the first half of 1995 total shipments of 30.906,000 tons are up an impressive 2.698.000 tons or 10 percent from 28,208,000 ions in the first half of 1994. On the Great Lakes, four of seven US ports handled improved tonnages in June over a year ago, led by Burlington Northern' s Allouez taconite facility shipping 1,381,000 gross tons for a 20 percent increase. Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Ryes Two Harbors and Duluth terminals shipped 1,042,000 and 944,000 tons for 12 percent and 11 percent gains, respectively. At the Presque Isle dock in Marquette, 675,000 tons of pellets were dispatched by Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad Co. for an 8 percent advance.
