At the new production line of Georg fischer Automobilguss GmbH in Singen, Germany, the as-cast casting fettling operation, geared mainly to axle, suspension and chassis components, has been fully automated and is now performed in two production lines arranged in parallel (Figure 1). One of the new features is the direct link between the fettling shop and the upstream moulding and blast cleaning facilities. While previous facilities were designed as separate island solutions with corresponding material handling and intermediate storage requirements for the castings, with this new solution there is no interruption whatsoever to the material flow. Fettling of the castings including separation, press trimming, hardness testing and flaw detection, is performed directly downstream of the pouring and shotblasting process. The cycle time for the fettling lines of approx. 14s per completely fettled casting cluster is less than the cycle time of the moulding plant.
