Yangtze to join the yellow

China's fabled Yellow River ran dry in 1995, while to the south the Yangtze overran its banks and caused terrible flooding. Unruly weather conditions in mid-1995 underlined the fact China's future depends on effective management of the rivers-and positive weather conditions. The rivers are key for agricultural growth to feed China's still-growing population and industrial growth to raise the masses above the subsistence level. Now there's a proposal for Yangtze River water to be diverted to serve the Yellow's traditional customers in the Beijing region, who were left thirsty last summer.
