Pyremrioid insecticides, synthetic analogues of pyrethrins that vary significantly in structure and potency, include 6 esters, Pyrethrin I is the most important for insect kill and pyrethrin II for insect knockdown. When label directions are followed,pyrethrin and pyrethroid insecticidal products usually do not cause adverse effects in cats and dogs. Repeated heavy use, oral ingestion, application on an unusually sensitive animal, or the topical use of some premise products are more likely to produce side effects. In many instances, side effects are mild and self-limiting or necessitate simple treatments and result in rapid recovery.
