Local productive inflammatory reactions have been noted on the thoracic or abdominal walls of gun dogs in Sweden for several decades, and they have typically resulted in death or euthanasia because of chronic infection. Grass material has been identified within many such lesions, but controversy exists as to whether the lesions are typically associated with plant foreign bodies, via inhalation, or with primary infection by Actinomyces or Nocardia species, via skin wounds. In a retrospective study, the clinical and pathologic aspects of the disease were evaluated in 27 afflicted dogs to better describe the pathogenesis of disease.
