Triple variational principles or eigenvalues of self-adjoint operators and operator functions

We derive triple variational principles for the eigenvalues of a self-adjoint operator pencil, which also allow a characterization of discrete eigenvalues within a gap of the essential spectrum. In the general case, we can prove only an inequality; the equality sign is shown to hold in four particular situations. [References: 14]
