A high integration and functionality controller IC for Active Matrix Electrophoretic Displays (AMEPDs) has been developed. The new controller architecture is the single-chip of the AMEPD back-end system which makes lower total system hardware cost and complexity, better ability of lower power states, high flexibility in panel resolution, signal timing and DC/AC Vcom operating mode used for microencapsulated and micro-cup electrophoretic display. The new controller IC has significantly expanded system integration and functionality features. It is suitable for the display controller IC of commercial AMEPD back-end system. The implementation of the new controller IC is examined in use with 6" and 8" AMEPD panels produced by Chunghwa Picture Tubes, LTD. (CPT). Furthermore, the resolution of the 6" and 8" AMEPD panels can achieve 800 × 600 (167dpi) and 1024 × 768 (160dpi). Depending on our single-chip AMEPD back-end system, the testing results of our AMEPD panel performance can reach 48% reflectivity, 16 gray level and 8:1 contrast ratio.
