Recently, various types of stereoscopic three-dimensional (3-D) displays have been developed and commercialized. With this increased public awareness and interest in 3-D displays, the need is rapidly emerging for a universal method to quantitatively compare the various technologies' ability to confer a sense of depth to viewers. In recent years, a number of methods for comparison have been suggested such as crosstalk, visual fatigue, and subjective measures of image quality; however, these methods fail to directly assess the various displays' ability to confer a sense of depth to the user solely on the basis of disparity information. This paper will outline a universal quantitative evaluation of stereoscopic 3-D display technologies that enables one to quantitatively compare stereoscopic 3-D displays in terms of their ability to confer a sense of depth to the viewer.
