Using improved conventional dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) manufacturing technology and an advanced VAD method, Sumitomo Electric has developed and produced a ribbon fiber slotted core cable with a newly developed non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZ-DSF), to be incorporated in large-capacity fiber optic networks. The newly developed NZ-DSF has a small chromatic dispersion slope with a large effective core area while maintaining superior bending performance. Using the NZ-DSF, Sumitomo Electric has also produced and tested a ribbon fiber slotted core cable with satisfactory results. Cable incorporating the NZ-DSF is therefore expected to be suitable for use in FTTH or FTTO networks and generate substantial economic benefits.
