An imaging approach to high-risk screening for breast cancer.

The current guidelines for breast cancer screening in the United States are for annual screening mammography in normal-risk women after the age of 40 years.Mammography is to continue yearly until a woman reaches the age when life expectancy is less than 5 years. However, in women with an increased risk of breast cancer, recommendations differ on the basis of specific risk factors. Risks are divided into lifestyle risks, risks related to Hormonal status, and familial and genetic risks. The risks in the first 2 categories are generally considered less significant, and in and of themselves lifestyle and hormonal issues do not constitute risks greater than 15% to 20% and at this point carry no specific recommendations for additional screening.
