Development of a compact 2.5Gbps wavelength-tunable optical transmitter module for metropolitan core DWDM network

Development of a Compact 2.5Gbps Wavelength-Tunable Optical Transmitter Module for Metropolitan Core DWDM Network-by Harunori Yoneda, Hirotaka Oomori, Hiromi Tanaka, Moriyasu Ichino, Touru kawagishi, Shigeo Hayashi, Humitoshi Kasyu and Mitsuaki Nishie - The world's smallest wavelength-tunable transmitter module for metropolitan DWDM systems was successfully developed by using low cost DFB-LD and newly designed integrated control circuits. All of the following functions are packaged in a 24-pin butterfly package (W18 × D35 × H8.5mm); an LD chip, an LD driver IC, an optical lens system, a thermo-electric cooler (TEC) and a CPU that controls LD temperature and its bias/modulation currents. This transmitter supports four wavelengths whose spacing between two adjacent wavelengths is 100 GHz in compliance with ITU-T grids. The wavelength is tuned by controlling the temperature of an LD chip through the digital interface, while wavelength drift is less than 10pm over 0 to 70 degree C. At 2.5Gbps operation, 2.0 dB penalty has been achieved over 400 km transmission. This transmitter module is expected to be applicable to the 2.5Gbps metropolitan DWDM system because of its cost, 8ize and functional benefits.
