The combination of fluorescence-based glucose detection, sensor miniaturization and the use of appropriate biomaterials could give the opportunity for achieving the requirements for long-term, continuous and convenient glucose monitoring. Optical sensors based on fluorescence quenching for measurement of the blood glucose level with a planar continuous flow-through cell are presented. The glucose level is detected via oxygen consumption which occurs as a consequence of the enzymatic reaction between immobilized glucose oxidase and glucose. For the achievement of appropriate permeability for glucose molecules, the polymer HydroThane (TM) with different water contents has been used. Also, the long-term stability under different storage conditions and the kinetic of HydroThane (TM) as polymer matrix for pH-sensitive fluorescence dyes were investigated.
