ISTA seed vigour survey - 2000

At a meeting of the ISTA/FIS working group on Seed Vigour Testing in 1999 it was concluded that a survey on the use of seed vigour tests in ISTA laboratories was needed. The last surveys were made in 1987 and 1990 (Fiala, 1989, Hampton, 1992). The objective of this survey was to determine the percentage of ISTA seed testing laboratories that were currently conducting vigour tests, how many tests were performed annually, what vigour tests are used most frequently and the proposed use of vigour testing results. The results of the survey are summarized in Table 1. This table also includes the results of a 1998 survey of official (Association of Official Seed Analysts) and commercial (Society of Commercial Seed Technologists) seed testing laboratories in North America for comparison (Spears, personal communication, 1999).
