CSP~R-CONCEPTS FOR STAINLESS STEEL AND THE FIRST CSP~R PRODUCTION PLANT AT AST/ITALY

With the 21 world-wide installed CSP~R (Compact Strip Production) plants, which essentially produce carbon steel grades, the production of stainless steel via the CSP~R process will achieve a higher degree of importance. Different concepts for the production of stainless steel strips consist of a CSP~R Caster in front of a Steckel or Compact Mill as well as a CSP~R Caster in combination with a thick slab caster and a conventional hot strip mill for mixed rolling of thin and thick slabs. After the successful completion of the experimental stage for the production of high alloyed steel at AST in Terni, Italy, this new technology concept for mixed rolling of thin and thick slabs was implemented on an industrial scale. The new CSP~R caster was installed inline with an existing hot strip mill and linked by a CSP~R furnace, to result in a complete CSP~R production plant. The first cast was performed on August 1~(st), 2001. The CSP~R caster has a capacity of approximately 1 Mio t/year of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels as well as silicon steel grades (grain orientedon grain oriented). Both, proven and new special technology packages have been implemented to control the overall process and to achieve finished product quality equal to or exceeding that obtained through a conventional process.
