French Laboratories launch new wheat vaccine

A natural vaccine made from algae was recently placed on the market. Cereal crops can be protected against fungal diseases with a new product derived from marine algae that stimulates the plants' natural defense systems. The principle of the substance is not to combat parasitic fungus but to directly activate the defense mechanisms of the plant--sort of a plant vaccine. The active agent, known as laminarine or glucane beta-1/3-1.6, was identified and developed by scientists at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - French National Center for Scientific Research) and Goemar Laboratories. The investigation leading to laminarine started about twelve years ago when Goemar scientists noticed that algae used by French farmers on their fields and the algae extracts produced by the company had a bio-stimulating effect on plants. CNRS was called on to help find out why this bio-stimulation was happening.
