OSHA TAKES AIM AT SAFETY INCENTIVE PROGRAMS

As part of their efforts to reduce workplace injuries, many employers have policies and practices that reward employees for safe behavior. If designed or implemented poorly, however, the programs can result in the underreporting of injuries, accidents, and hazards. Though the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Washington, D.C.) has had its eye on safety incentive programs for some time, the agency issued new guidance March 12 indicating that such programs could violate anti-retaliation and recordkeeping laws. If your company has safety incentive programs, this announcement means it's time to give them another look to ensure they're in compliance.
