She had found that gem on sale at a Washington, B.C., library and picked it up for 1 dollar. The album, it turns out, was made by Folkways Records & Service Corp., an innovative firm that sought "to document the entire world of sound." From 1948 to 1986, the company released 2,168 albums encompassing music, poetry, spoken word, instruction, individuals, communities, current events, and natural sounds--including sounds of the scrapyard.
