STEEL RECYCLING RATE CLIMBS IN 2001

Despite the sluggish U.S. economy and the troubles afflicting the domestic steel industry, the overall steel recycling rate rose last year to 67.8 percent-up 3.7 percentage points from the 2000 rate of 64.1 percent, reports the Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) (Pittsburgh). In achieving that rate, the steel industry recycled nearly 66 million tons of scrap in 2001.By product category, the automobile recycling rate grew from 95.4 percent in 2000 to about 102 percent last year, while the rate for household appliances inched up from 84 percent in 2000 to 85 percent, SRI says.
