Recyclers Forge Partnerships

Cozzi Iron & Metal Inc. (Chicago) and Newell Industries Inc. (San Antonio) have formed a joint venture to acquire Smithey Recycling Co. (Phoenix), a 25-acre ferrous and nonferrous scrap facility that features a 3,000-hp 80104 Newell shredder and a 1,000-ton Harris shear. "We intend to significantly increase the business that's being done there in both nonferrous and ferrous," says Scott Newell, president of Newell Industries. This venture, which will operate under the name Salt River Recycling, gives Cozzi 13 scrap recycling plants in four states and its first west of the Mississippi River. The venture also represents Newell's return to Arizona. The firm, which has a processing plant in El Paso and an interest in Hawaii Metal Recycling Co. (Honolulu), operated a recycling facility in Phoenix until the mid-1960s.
