A WTO interim report last week condemned the US steel import tariffs introduced in March 2002 as illegal. Sources close to the WTO noted that the confidential report was sent out on March 26 to those countries appealing against the US Section 201 safeguard measures. The 22 opponents are the 15 members of the European Union, Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Norway, New Zealand, Switzerland and China. They submitted their complaints to the WTO last June. It is at the discretion of the recipients whether to disclose the report's contents, as it would usually only go public one month after being distributed, a Eurofer official explained.
