Auto Disassembly Plant Debuts in Baltimore

In a move that some shredder operators might consider devolution of the industry, Comprehensive Automotive Reclamation Services of Maryland (CARS) has opened an automobile disassembly plant in Baltimore that will initially dismantle 80 vehicles a day, or about 21,000 a year. When fully operational in about three years, the 4.5-million dollars venture will reportedly be capable of disassembling around 40,000 cars annually. While CARS officials would not comment on the operation, other industry publications have called its disassembly techniques labor-intensive. And, indeed, the president of the Baltimore Development Corp. praises the operation for its potential to "employ a significant number of city residents."
