Recycling Rates Rise in '95

The paper industry's goal is to recycle 50 percent of all U.S. paper by 2000. Scrap Tire Recovery Rolls On. Of the estimated 253 million scrap tires generated in 1995, approximately 174.5 million-or 69 percent-were recovered, representing a 26-percent increase over the 138.5 million scrap tires recycled in 1994, according to the Scrap Tire Management Council (Washington, D.C.). Of the various recovery markets, tire-derived fuel posted the largest gain, increasing 29 percent, from 101 million scrap tires consumed in 1994 to 130 million last year. The civil engineering and ground rubber markets each grew 33 percent, with the former increasing from 9 million to 12 million and the latter expanding from 4.5 million to 6 million, the council reports. Scrap tire markets for punched/stamped products and agricultural applications were unchanged, and pyrolysis was the only segment to decrease last year, largely due to the absence of commercial operations and the demise of demonstration facilities.
