An enduring ecological reference point for the world, Greenland's ice sheets are the site of a centuries-old seafood community which forms the very fibre of domestic society. But as Ewen Cook discovers, this industry of unique geography and spirit ison the verge of momentous transformation. 'The Mother of the Sea was bothered by the Imiits' mil deeds at the settlement, and as a punishment, she gathered all the animals in her fiery hair at the bottom of the sea.' The most famous of all Greenlandic myths and legends, the story of the Mother of the Sea, warns its industrious natives against neglecting the bounty of the landscape - or else risk empty nets and hunting pouches. It is a cautionary tale that almost every country's seafood industry would do well to heed, but it is an especially poignant warning for its country of origin at the present moment.
