Tmagine a world without landfills. If there are no landfills, of course, you need la world that generates no waste. It's pretty hard to imagine today, but there's a growing movement to achieve that goal. The movement is based on a concept called zero waste or, alternatively, zero landfill. This isn't a green pipe dream embraced by only the most radical tree-huggers. It's a philosophy adopted by dozens of cities, counties, states, and provinces around the world, including major U.S. cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Some of the world's largest corporations--Wal-Mart, Anheuser-Busch, Toyota, and others--are walking this walk. And at least two organizations are dedicated to the topic--the Zero Waste Alliance and the Zero Waste International Alliance. "The zero waste movement is now international and growing exponentially," the Institute for Local Self-Reliance asserts on its Web site.
