The adoption of new steel production facilities and new process tech. nologies increasingly allows for the production of deep-drawing qualities according to the electric steelmaking route. Investigations recently carried out by Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI) on an industrial scale were focused on the combined charging and processing of hot metal, DRI/HBI and scrap in a modified electric arc furnace. The crude steel produced in this manner features significantly lower contents of nitrogen, thus reducing the subsequently necessary metallurgical work normally carried out in the vacuum degassing facility. The results have shown that refined steel is weii suited even for extra-deep-drawing applications.
