A contract of 1702 for felling woods in Strachan parish, Kincardineshire

Our knowledge on the use and management of our native woodlands in Scotland up to the eighteenth century is still meagre, with detailed information about a few woods but no or only fragmentary records for other districts (Smout 1997; Mills and Crone,2012). Deeside in NE Scotland still has some woods of native Scots pine, several being of high conservation value and protected as National Nature Reserves or Sites of Special Scientific Interest. But only for certain Deeside woods, e.g. Glen Tanar, do we have documentation onfelling and bark peeling, and it is desirable to put on record more information about other woods in the valley in order to make general statements about exploitation and human impact.
