In "Of Shadows and white scarves," [August], M.L. Cummings misses the mark in her attempt to "set the record straight" in the unmanned air system debate. She implies that the U.S. Air Force relies heavily, if not exclusively, on officer pilots to operate its fleet of unmanned aircraft, and then argues that this is neither necessary nor effective, as evidenced by the Army's UAS program, which she compares favorably with that of the Air Force. Cummings is right that unmanned aircraft have different crew requirements than manned aircraft, but, depending on the nature of the tasks to be performed by the aircraft, there still is a need for officer pilots. Flying unmanned aircraft together with F-16CJs, F/A-18s, F-15Es and B-1s as an integrated strike package requires skills and situational awareness that enlisted UAS operators who are tethered to small Army units can never develop. In short, Cummings fails to appreciate the breadth of the Air Force's mission and vision as compared to that of the Army's. Furthermore, Cummings is flat-out wrong to say the Army UAS program is more effective.
