The holy month of Ramadan is observed by more than one billion Muslims worldwide, who fast from sunrise to sunset and then celebrate afterwards. As one of the five basic tenets of Islam, it's a time of worship and contemplation, of religious duty. But it's also a time to strengthen one's family and community ties. In Cairo, Ramadan is the best month of the year. The streets are brightly lit, shops are decorated with colorful lanterns and people are happy and full of hope.
