Aims. - Most psychotropic drugs disturb weight regulation and may induce weight gain. We aimed at studying the effects of training targeted at the Lipox_(max) in patients treated by those drugs in order to investigate he preventing effect on weight gain of such a procedure. Methods. - Fourteen patients with a heavy psychotropic treatment with neuroteptic underwent an electrical bioimpedance assessment of body composition, a nutritional assessment and had to fill the physical activities questionnaire Voorips. They were then trained at the LIPOX_(max) and were reevaluated after 3 months. In nine patients, VO_(2max). increased or remained (23.37+-3.36 to 30, 63+-5.16) and in five subjects, it decreased (36.03+-5.25 to 29.94+-4.45). In the nine patients whose VO_(2max) increased, there was a weight loss (83.57 to 80.67; p<0.05) and a decrease in hips circumference (109.75 +-6.50 cm to 106.45 +-6.19 cm), while there was a nonsignificant tendency to an impovement in the balance of substrates. In subjects whose VO_(2max) decreased, fat mass increased by 5 kg on the average (23.82+- 1.06 kg to 28.8 +-1.31 kg; p<0.02). Conclusion. -This study suggests that endurance training at LIPOX_(max) could be effective in the prevention of psychotropic drugs-induced weight gain in patients in whom it results in an ergometric improvement that reflects its implementation and efficiency. Effects of a more intense and prolonged training remain to be defined. Modifications of the balance of substrates are non significant on this small sample evaluated in a limited time.
