US drought means more challenges for coal barges

While the Midwest drought is causing some pain for the barging industry, most coal producers get off easy compared to the agricultural community that competes for the transportation during harvest season. But there has been some impact. Barge operators are now loading coal barges up to a depth of nine feet compared with a previous average of around 10 or 11 feet.
