A better way to stop friendly fire

Last month's Bold Quest combat identification demonstration in Indiana incorporated a new emphasis on the psychological factors that can determine whether coalition troops make the right decisions about whether to fire their weapons or call for airstrikes. Past Bold Quest demonstrations have focused almost exclusively on technology as the best way to reduce the risk of fratricide among allies - for example, testing digital transmission of target coordinates to a fighter pilot's cockpit. At this year's event, which ran Sept. 8-23, troops progressed from classroom work to virtual reality exercises to real-world exercises at a mock Afghan village at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Complex in Indiana.
