Tim Trainer, vice president of operations at iRobot Corp., will always remember the flurry of emails and phone calls that circulated among iRobot's leadership immediately following the Japan earthquake in March. The Bedford, Mass., company wanted to help, but no one was sure what kind of robotic capabilities responders would need. In the end, U.S.-built robots, including iRobot's battle-tested PackBots and larger Warrior vehicles, proved their value during the aftermath.
