OLEFIN RING-CLOSING METATHESIS

Olefin metathesis was defined for the first time by Calderon in 1967 as a cat-alytically induced reaction wherein olefins undergo bond reorganization resulting in a redistribution of alkylidene moieties. The first observation of the metathesis of propene at high temperature was reported in 1931; the first catalyzed metathesis reactions were discovered in the 1950's when industrial chemists at DuPont, Standard Oil, and Phillips Petroleum reported that propene led to ethylene and 2-butenes when it was heated with molybdenum on alumina.
