Stem canker of yew trees (Taxus baccata L.) in the Furstenwald near Chur (Graubunden, Switzerland).

An important yew population (of 120- to 220-year-old trees) is located in the Furstenwald. Every fourth yew manifests extensive stem canker. The paper describes the yew population and the stem cankers, which are thought to be the result of a fungal infection. Some canker wounds are colonised by a basidiocarp of the Golden Spreading Polypore (Phellinus chrysoloma). Similar stem cankers are found on the yews on the Utliberg near Zurich. No basidiocarps of Phellinus chrysoloma were found there, but basidicarps of the parchment fungus Amylostereum laevigatum were sometimes present. Both of these fungi are considered to be pathogenic.
