Classical swine fever in wild boars in Switzerland

Symptoms of classical swine fever (CSF) were observed in wild boars in the southern part (Ticino region) of Switzerland in May 1998. CSF virus was isolated from submitted samples. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction followed by direct nucleotide sequencing of the 5' non-translated region showed that this virus was identical to an isolate previously recognized in wild boars in Varese (Italy). Antibodies to CSF virus were detected in most animals. The movement of pigs was limited as a disease control measure. Hunting was banned for 2 months to avoid disturbing potentially infected wild boars.
