摘要

Co-ops are the unnoticed giant in the New Zealand economy. There are about 300 active co-ops and mutual societies in New Zealand. They have total assets worth over 20 billion dollar and annual turnover of over 27 billion dollar. Co-ops account for 21percent of this country's GDP. You don't hear much about that because corporations that own our media and our financial institutions can't buy and sell co-ops. Co-ops are collective enterprises. In business, a cooperative is a limited liability entity just like other companies. The critical difference is that it is an enterprise democratically controlled for the purpose of conducting business that provides benefits to the owners in proportion to their participation.
