The transition from the maternal form of gene expression to a zygotic form (MZT) (other terms used to describe this phenomenon include midblastula transition (MBT)) determines an important stage in the lives of all embryos. This stage is characterized by a transition from early development, during which time the fetus is fully dependent on proteins and RNA produced under the control of the genetic apparatus of the mother during oogenesis to the stage when mRNA and proteins are produced as a result of the activation of the zygote genome. The term “MZT” is mostly used in publications on research on drosophila and mammals (Robbins, 1980, 1984; Barnes and Eyestone, 1990). In contrast, in research publications on amphibians and fish, a different term, “midblastula transition” (MBT) is usually used. However, these terms are used to describe almost the same biological processes. It is more important that, these days, not in Russia, but abroad, only a few remember that, before the terms “MZT” and “MBT,” we had the term “morphogenetic function of the nucleus” (MFN).
