Crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbon productioni reached a record high of 144.2 million cubic metres in 2003.This represents a 5.3 percent rise from 2002.Most of this increase was the result of the commencement of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project in Alberta and strong growth in offshore Newfoundland and Labrador production.
