An experiment was conducted in Peshawar, Pakistan, during 2001-03 to study the genetics of the important traits of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) using 8x8 diallel analysis. The number of days to heading, flag leaf area, number of tillers per plant, number of days to maturity, plant height and yield per plant were evaluated. Component analysis indicated that the additive component was significant for number of days to heading, flag leaf area, number of days to maturity and plant height, but not significant for number of tillers per plant and yield per plant. The dominance component was significant for number of days to heading, number of tillers per plant and yield per plant, but not significant for the other traits. The additive type of gene action was significant for number of days to heading, plant height and number of days to maturity, while the overdominance type of gene action was significant for flag leaf area, number of tillers per plant and yield per plant. The number of days to heading, number of tillers per plant and number of days to maturity were controlled by recessive genes, while dominant genes controlled plant height, flag leaf area and yield per plant..
