This year's timely and challenging theme for SPE Offshore Europe is "How to inspire the next generation". As Michael Engell-Jensen, Co-Chair of SPE Offshore Europe, puts it: "For many decades to come, oil and gas will remain indispensable to the world for securing heat, light, mobility and prosperity. As a responsible industry, we must address society's concerns about our operations and the hydrocarbons on which the world relies." American oil companies and service providers have played a big part in North Sea oil exploration and production over the past 50 years - and will continue to do so for years to come. An example of the long investment horizons in this industry is the ConocoPhillips-operated Ekofisk field, the oldest in the North Sea with production start in 1971. With 122 million cubic meters of remaining recoverable reserves, it is still the biggest producing oil field in Norway. After several phases of development and modernization, it is expected produce until 2050 and beyond. Another example is the planned Statoil-operated Johan Sverdrup field, the world's largest discovery in 2010 in a mature part of the North Sea, which is estimated to produce for more than 70 years after its planned production start in 2019.
