Genetic variability for salt tolerance in spring wheat.

Ten spring wheat cultivars (Ghaznavi-98, Oqab-2000, Tatara, Takbeer, Fakhr-e-Sarhad, Inqilab, SARC-3, Chanab-2000, Dera-98 and Nowshera-96) were evaluated for salinity tolerance using 3 saline hydroponic levels (0.6 and 12 dSm-1). Data on shoot and root weights, seedling height and number of leaves per plant showed highly significant differences (P<0.01) among the cultivars and salinity levels. Cultivar x salinity interactions were significant for shoot and root weights only. Compared to the control, the reduction in shoot weight ranged from 20 to 52% at 6 dSm-1, and from 60 to 78% at 12 dSm-1. Root weight per plant was reduced by 17-51 and 57-76% under 6 and 12 dSm-1, respectively. A 43 and 71% reduction in shoot and root weights was observed when the 10 cultivars were averaged at 12 dSm-1. Seedling height and number of leaves per plant were lower by 29 and 35% under a salinity level of 12 dSm-1, indicating the adverse effect of salinity on wheat growth and development. Oqab-2000, Tatara and Gaznavi-98 exhibited the lowest reduction in all growth traits, indicating greater salt tolerance..
