Screening of garlic varieties/lines for resistance to rust (Puccinia porri) under natural field conditions.

A total of 30 local and exotic garlic cultivars/lines were tested against garlic rust (Puccinia porri) in Tarnab, Peshawar, Pakistan, during the 2002/03 and 2003/04 growing seasons. Almost all cultivars/lines tested performed poorly and showed high levels of puccinial rust infection during both growing seasons. Only one cultivar, Rosato, gave consistent outstanding performance. Rust severities of 0 and 10% were recorded on this cultivar during both growing seasons, respectively. This cultivar, because of its consistent outstanding performance against rust, better yield, large bulb size and good storage quality characteristics, is recommended for sowing, especially in the areas of high rust incidence..
