EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS APPLICATION ON THE YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF WHEAT

The study was conducted at the Malakandher Research Farm, NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar during 2000-2001 to determine the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on the yield and yield components of wheat Analysis of the data revealed that different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and their interaction significantly affected yields and yield components of wheat Mean values of the nitrogen shows that maximum emergence m~(-2), productive tillers m~(-2), grain yield and biological yield was recorded in those plots which were treated with 150 kg N ha~(-1), while maximum days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height were noted in those plots which received nitrogen at the rate of 200 kg N ha~(-1). Similarly different doses of phosphorus indicated that maximum emergence m~(-2), productive tillers m~(-2), grain yield and biological yield were noted in plots treated with 45 kg P ha~(-1), while maximum days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height were noted in plots which were treated at the rateof 135 kg P ha~(-1). In case of NP interaction, maximum emergence m~(-2), plant height, productive tillers m~(-2), grain yield and biological yield were obtained when plots were fertilized at the rate of 150:45 kg NP ha~(-1), while maximum days to flowering and days to maturity were recorded from plots fertilized at the rate of 200:135 kg NP ha~(-1). On average basis of data 150 kg N ha~(-1) and 45 kg P ha~(-1) have given good performance as compared to other levels of N and P.
