Growth factors and yield of maize as influence by phosphorus and potash fertilization.

A study was conducted in Peshawar, Pakistan during kharif 2003 to quantify the effects of different levels (30, 60 and 90 kg ha-1) of P and K on the growth factors and yield of maize cultivars Azam and Kissan-90. Significant differences were found among cultivars for plant height and grain yield while emergence, days to tasseling, silking and maturity were non-significantly affected by the cultivars. Azam produced taller plants (193 cm) compared to Kissan-90 (188 cm). The high levels of P and K significantly affected all the growth factors. Days to tasseling, silking and maturity were initiated earlier with increased in levels of phosphorus and potash application. The highest grain yield of 1760 kg ha-1 was obtained with 90 kg P ha-1, whereas the sole effect of K on grain yield was non-significant. Compared to Kissan-90, Azam with 90 kg P ha-1 and 60 kg K ha-1 gave better growth and yield performance under Peshawar conditions..
