Combining ability analysis in intraspecific crosses of spring wheat.

Five spring wheat genotypes were crossed in a diallel fashion to estimate their combining ability for yield and its components in an experiment conducted at the Barani Agricultural Research Station, Fatehjang during 2004-05. Analysis of variance showed highly significant results for flag leaf area, plant height, tillers plant-1, spike length, spikelets spike-1, grains spike-1, 1000-grain weight and grain yield plant-1. Pak 81 was the best general combiner for flag leaf area, grain yield plant-1, spikelets spike-1 and grains spike-1. The cross Kohistan 97x Rawal 87 was the best specific combiner for flag leaf area, grains spike-1, spike length and 1000-grain weight. The cross Kohistan 97x8973 showed highest specific combining ability value for plant height and grain yield plant-1. The reciprocal effects were negligible for all the traits. Additive gene action was exhibited by most of the plant characters. Pak 81 was the best general combiner for most of the traits and could be utilized frequently for crossing purposes. In general, the plant material showed plenty of variability which could be exploited in subsequent generations to derive wheat germplasm with superior attributes..
