In 1999 DML Composites supplied the first composite primary structure for the offshore industry. The Riser Arch Tray Structures were included by Halliburton Subsea as part of the riser support system for the Norsk Hydro Troll C oilfield. The components are a critical part of the development, limiting the loads the risers apply to the floating platform above, and are themselves subject to static, dynamic and environmental loads, which can be extreme in storm conditions.This paper reports on the design and manufacture of the composites riser arch trays. Details of the design method, analyses completed and the components supplied will be presented. In all 42 trays were installed. This project represents a major step forward in the use of composite materials in critical components for the offshore oil industry and is the most demanding use of such materials to date.
