New Facilities Dedication and Composites Symposium, U. of Stuttgart IFB

The IFB (Institute for Aircraft Construction) inaugurated its new manufacturing center with a dedicated, day-long, invitational symposium and facilities tour, at the University of Stuttgart campus, on 8 October 2004. Prof. Klaus Drechsler, head of the facility - and SAMPE Europe's President - opened the event and gave an overview of the IFB and its work. This was followed by a formal welcome from Prof. Wolfgang Ehlers, Prorector of the University. The IFB is extensively involved with developmental textile-based composites, plus related technologies such as preforms, weaving/braiding, stitching, etc. While its focus is aerospace, other sectors come in for attention as well. Examples of its developmental work in automotive and sports applications were on view in the lab, along with generic structural tubes, profiles and similar components. The morning comprised several textile-oriented composite technical presentations. Dr. Juergen Brand, longtime colleague of Klaus Drechsler's, at EADS Corporate Research center, came out of retirement to open the technical symposium, with a comprehensive presentation entitled "Twenty years of Textile Technology for Fiber Reinforced Composites". What began as a colorful overview, also included a host of lessons learned, along with valuable tips for (successfully) dealing with top management.
