'National Infrastructure and Transportation Security'

US homeland security was manageable by traditional military and civil defense means through September 10, 2001. September 11, 2001 mode clear as never before the capability of foreign nations, terror organizations, and organized crime syndicates to inflict incalculable harm upon US nationals within the confines of our national borders. In a series of articles follow, the SAMPE Infrastructure and Transportation Security Committee will apprise Members of the progress being made to secure the Nation's infrastructure and transportation systems. As a part of this series the Committee will address specific issues ranging from new regulations governing material and process technologies to new business opportunities. In response to these attacks, and in anticipation of more, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) came into existence on November 25, 2002. Its principal mission is to reduce the vulnerability of the United States to terrorism; minimize damage, and assist in recovery from terrorist attacks; prevent terrorist attacks within the United States; ensure that the overall economic security of the United States is not diminished by efforts, activities and programs aimed at securing the homeland; and monitor connections between illegal drug trafficking and terrorism, coordinate efforts to sever such connections and otherwise contribute to efforts to interdict illegal drug trafficking.
